Olivet Nazarene University was knocked from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 38-16 loss to Concordia (Mich.) University on Saturday at Ward Field in front of crowd of 2,113 in a Mid-States Football Association crossover game.
Olivet (3-1) jumped out to a 10-7 first-quarter lead on a Rashaan Gaymon touchdown reception and a 24-yard field goal by Josh Anderson.
Concordia (3-0) answered with a touchdown late in the first quarter and another TD in the second quarter to take a 21-10 halftime lead.
ONU opened the second half with a 13-play, 75-yard drive capped by a 10-yard TD run by Jordan Lawton to cut the deficit to 21-16. That was the last score by the Tigers for the remainder of the game.
Concordia shut down the ONU attack and added two touchdown passes by Seth Suida and a fourth-quarter field goal for the final count.
Lawton finished with 47 yards rushing on 17 carries, and Erik Anderson added 48 yards on 12 attempts. Lawton completed 19 of 38 passes for 234 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions.
Caleb Coe led the defense with 19 tackles, including 9 solos and 3 tackles for loss, and Jalon Simpson collected 12 tackles.
Next up for ONU is Marian University (1-1) in another MSFA crossover at 1 p.m. Saturday at Ward Field.
