Ruth Heideman celebrated her 90th birthday May 11 while attending her granddaughter’s graduation from Illinois State University. An open house will be held from 2 to 4:30 p.m. June 9 at the Ashkum Coliseum, given by her children. A light lunch will be served. All are welcome, and the family requests no gifts, please.

Ruth was born in 1929 and grew up in Cullom, one of 14 children born to Irene and Andrew Gassler. She married Glenn Heideman in 1954. They lived in Ashkum, raising their four children: Dan, of Terrell, Texas; Jean, of Chicago; Paul, of Ashkum; and Roger, of Bloomington. Glenn died in 1991.

Ruth was employed for 60 years, working for Katherine Beich Candy Company in Bloomington, the Ashkum Fertilizer Plant (Occidental) and Meier Oil.

She is a member of the Assumption Catholic Church, Council of Catholic Women, the American Legion Auxiliary and serves as the township clerk. In addition, her volunteer work includes nursing homes in Danforth and Clifton.

Ruth enjoys playing euchre, Phase 10 and Uno and following her five grandchildren’s sports and academic pursuits. She continues to keep her flower beds blooming, and she’s known for her pies, especially lemon meringue.

Cards can be sent to: Ruth Heideman, P.O. Box 315, Ashkum, IL 60911.
