The name Linda Brown probably does not automatically ring a bell with you.
There is unfortunate irony here. “Let freedom ring’’ is a cherished American term, and the circumstances surrounding Brown’s early life helped our country extend an important freedom that had been denied to millions for far too long.
Brown, who died Sunday at age 75, was only 9 years old when her father joined a lawsuit against the Topeka, Kan., Board of Education that demanded it reverse a policy allowing for racial segregation of schools.
Linda was an African-American girl who was barred from attending a school just seven blocks from her home, and instead had to travel a mile to attend an all-black school.
The case eventually reached the Supreme Court.
On May 17, 1954, the court ruled unanimously that school segregation was unconstitutional because “separate educational facilities are inherently unequal.”
The ruling did not spell out any process to end segregation, and it remained in various parts of the country for years thereafter. But it did set the tone for what eventually would come, and now segregation is legally a thing of the past.
The importance of this can’t be overlooked, but somehow the death of Brown and the impact of the case has been largely ignored by the national media. This is where the unfortunate irony part comes into play. Her contribution to our country’s history is significant, and her legacy will outlive that of many, including Stormy Daniels.
