Hats off to countless organizations and individuals who joined the fight against recent floodwaters, then, powered the rescue and recovery efforts in three counties inundated by record flooding after heavy rains.

All involved should take great pride in their unselfish and caring efforts. Countless volunteers continue to fuel the recovery in Kankakee, Iroquois and Vermillion counties. Please accept our thanks and praise.

It's always risky to single out individuals and organizations that distinguish themselves in times of widespread crisis, but we'll take the risk to extend special thanks and admiration to several organizations. They include the Aroma Park United Methodist Church, which opened its doors for extended hours and offered three meals per day and cleaning supplies, and the Trinity Church in Watseka, which housed an American Red Cross shelter for as many as 90 occupants.

Kankakee Area Jaycees is organizing emergency relief to aid flood victims. Funds collected will be used to provide things such as cleaning supplies, dry goods, water pumps, sandbags, secure transportation, canned items, pet supplies, safety items and meals for those in shelters and volunteers. Cash and checks made out to Kankakee Area Jaycees with the memo "flood relief" can be mailed to P.O. Box 1991, Kankakee, IL 60901. Donors can use credit cards or Pay Pal by visiting kankakeejaycees.org/flood. To volunteer or for information, go to facebook.com/K3Jaycees.

State, city, village and county government agencies also pulled out the stops and rallied their forces along with countless volunteers. People wishing to donate cleaning supplies or cash in the form of gift cards can drop them off at the village hall in Bradley, 147 S. Michigan Ave., or Aroma Park United Methodist Church located at Third and Division streets in Aroma Park or call 815-530-1955.

Lutheran Church Ministries plans to assemble volunteers to perform muck-out operations in Iroquois County on Saturday. Organizers said those requesting assistance should call Iroquois County EOC at 815-432-6997.
