Vernon M. Dalton, 87, of Manteno, passed away Sunday (June 23, 2019) at his home.

He was born Aug. 17, 1931, in Mt. Vernon, the son of Raymond M. and Opal Mae Cantwell Dalton.

Vernon married Peggy Varvel on Nov. 14, 1980, in Aroma Park.

He served on the Kankakee Police Department. Vernon worked in plumbing and heating for several years. He also worked for 20 years at Kankakee School District 111.

Vernon enjoyed football and shooting at the range.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

Surviving are his wife, Peggy Dalton, of Manteno; two daughters, Vicki (Donald) Shiffer, of Joliet, and Rhonda (Kenneth) Hicks, of Georgia; one stepdaughter, Carla (Brian) Johnson, of Manteno; three stepsons, Charles (Beverly) Nolte, of Kankakee, Tracy (Cheryl) Nolte, of Indiana, and Robin (Susan) Nolte, of Kankakee; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several step-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents; one brother, Gene; and three sisters, Rachel, Rose and Caroline.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. Friday, June 28, until the 1 p.m. funeral service at Clancy-Gernon-Hertz Funeral Home in Kankakee. The Rev. Scott Henley will officiate the ceremony. Interment will follow in Kankakee Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Aroma Township.

Memorials may be made to the wishes of the family.
