Gregory W. Merrill, 62, of Kankakee, passed away Tuesday (July 2, 2019) at his home.

A celebration of his life will be from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, at the Civic Auditorium in Kankakee.

Memorials may be made to the wishes of the family, in lieu of flowers.

Mr. Merrill retired as principal of Kankakee High School in 2013, after 27 years of service to Kankakee School District 111 and 34 years of service in education.

He was an educator, coach and administrator who started his career as a teacher and coach in Gilman and the Iroquois West school district.

Greg was born Aug. 4, 1956, in Findlay, Ohio, the eldest son of Wayne F. and Barbara J. Merrill.

He enjoyed riding motorcycles, kayaking and fishing.

Surviving are his two children, Jessica J. Merrill, of Houston, Texas, and G. Scott Merrill, of Kankakee; his wife, the former Rusti L. Walker, of Kankakee; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Kurt and Lisa Merrill, of Hobart, Ind., Matt and Pam Merrill, of Bourbonnais, and Lance and Joy Merrill, of Mt. Morris; one brother-in-law, Mark True, of Mt. Morris; several nieces and nephews and their children; two stepsons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Alana Russow, of Chicago, and Justin and Jennifer Russow, of Bradley; and six grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents; and sister, Patti True.
