It took nearly six hours for the southbound lanes of Interstate 57 to reopen at Peotone following a crash on Thursday between two semis that caused no injuries but scattered garbage and scrap metal across both lanes.
Illinois State Police say the semi hauling scrap metal was stopped on the shoulder and partially in the right lane when the truck hauling garbage crashed into it causing both to roll over. The accident occurred right before 8 a.m.
Both drivers were uninjured, but police are citing the driver who was parked with improper stopping on the roadway, improper lane usage and no reflective tape on the rear of the trailer.
The truck hauling garbage landed in the median. Traffic was backed up for hours and motorists were forced to exit at Monee.
All lanes were reopened around 2 p.m.
