Daily Journal staff report

Three tagged fish were caught after the first weekend of the 36th annual Kankakee River Fishing Derby.

The Derby is presented by the Northern Illinois Anglers Association and runs through Sunday, July 7.

Thomas Palhegyi, of Sauk Village, caught a fish sponsored by the Bourbonnais Friendship Festival with a $500 cash prize. The popular festival wrapped up its 2019 run on Sunday.

Jeff Hanson, of Bourbonnais, caught a fish sponsored by the Wilmington Free Press with a prize of $500 in fishing equipment.

Evan Legacy, of Cissna Park, caught the Security Lumber sponsored fish with a prize of $500 in merchandise from the Bradley business.

This year the Derby added flathead catfish to the Big Board. Leading that category is James Merritt, of Braidwood, with a 23-pound, 11-ounce entry. The flathead is 17 pounds heavier than any other fish caught in that category to date.

As of early this morning, no other tagged fish had been listed as being caught on Monday. Check kankakeefishingderby.com for updates.
