A homeowner in rural Sheldon shot and injured a man who allegedly came to his home looking for free firewood.
Iroquois County Sheriff's Police say the shooting occurred late Monday afternoon but released no names and few details on why the Sheldon homeowner opened fire.
According to a police report, the shooting victim went to a home "to retrieve what had been publicly advertised as free firewood."
They say the homeowner asked this person to leave, thinking he was drunk, and asked him to return. "The individual became belligerent and approached the homeowner in an aggressive manner, at which time he was shot," the report said.
The shooting victim fled the scene along with another person and was treated at Iroquois Memorial Hospital. He is reportedly in stable condition. Police interviewed the homeowner and the person who was with the shooting victim, but have made no arrests.
