JOLIET — A pregnant Coal City woman died when a part from a semi truck tractor trailer broke away and crashed through her front windshield Tuesday on Interstate 80.

Melinda Cullen, 38, was pronounced dead at a local hospital, according to Illinois State Police District 5.

Cullen was a mother to three daughters and was expecting her first son in April, a statement from the family read Wednesday.

According to the family, the baby did not survive the crash.

Troopers responded to the accident near Rowell Avenue on Joliet's southeast side at 2:18 p.m.

According to a preliminary investigation, the semi was traveling eastbound on Interstate 80 when its wheel hub detached from its rear tractor axle.

The wheel hub crossed over into the westbound lanes of I-80, crashing through the windshield of Cullen's GMC Acadia.

The driver of the semi tractor trailer, 59-year-old Antanas Serevia, of Boilingbrook, was charged with a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Act violation for unsafe equipment.
