KANKAKEE — Foul play has been ruled out in the death of a Kankakee man who became ill in his cell at Jerome Combs Detention Center on Christmas Eve.

Kankakee County Coroner Bob Gessner said 53-year-old Mark D. Sumrall was pronounced dead at the jail at 4:17 a.m.

According to Kankakee County Sheriff's Police, Kankakee Fire paramedics were called at 3:08 a.m. for an inmate in distress.

Sumrall became unresponsive and officers performed CPR until paramedics arrived. 

There were no signs of trauma, Gessner said.

The final cause of death is pending the results of toxicology tests.

Sumrall's death remains under investigation.

Sumrall was booked into the jail at 7:50 p.m. on Dec. 23, according to Gessner.

Sumrall was arrested by Kankakee Police at 6:44 p.m., according to the sheriff's release.

The preliminary charge was aggravated unlawful use of a weapon found loaded in a vehicle and no FOID card.
