A four-vehicle wreck on Interstate 57 sent 16 people to Kankakee's two hospitals on Friday evening and shut down the northbound lanes for nearly an hour.
According to Illinois State Police, the crash occurred around 6 p.m. at the 323 milemarker just north of the Manteno exit. Police have not determined what caused the wreck.
The injured were transported to Presence St. Mary's Hospital and Riverside Medical Center, but their conditions were not released. None of their injuries, however, were life-threatening, police said. Three other people were treated at the scene but declined to be taken to the hospital, said Scott O'Brien, the Manteno Fire Chief.
The interstate was shut down for about an hour as tow trucks cleared the scene and traffic began to move around 7 p.m.
The crash remains under investigation.
O'Brien said that there was another wreck at the same location just one hour before the more serious crash. The people involved in that accident refused treatment, O'Brien said.
