Badly burned human remains were found in a flaming vehicle Saturday night near Pembroke.

The body was burned beyond recognition, and the Kankakee County Coroner's Office has not yet been able to identify the body, Coroner Bob Gessner said Monday. An autopsy performed Monday determined only that the remains belong to a male.

Kankakee County officials are now working with Indiana police to determine if the man could be a missing person from Newton County.

The burning car was discovered by Kankakee County sheriff's police in a ditch at 16321 E 5480S Road at around 6 p.m. Saturday. After Pembroke firefighters extinguished the blaze, a burned dog corpse was also found, Gessner said.

Gessner said the Illinois State Fire Marshall's office has been called to investigate.
