A hit 1972 single recorded by Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show, it tells the story of a man’s unsuccessful attempt to revive a relationship: “Sylvia’s mother says Sylvia’s happy so why don’t you leave her alone?’’

‘Mama’s Broken Heart’

In this country hit from 2013, Miranda Lambert sings about a woman losing control after a break-up and struggling to heed her mother’s advice: “My mama came from a softer generation where you get a grip and bite your lip just to save a little face.’’

‘Dear Mama’

A 1995 song from acclaimed hip-hop artist 2Pac Shakur, the song pays tribute to his mother despite the personal demons she fought while raising him: “There’s no way I can pay you back, but my plans to show you that I understand: You are appreciated.’’

‘It’s Alright, Ma (I’m only Bleeding)’

A 1965 Bob Dylan classic, it’s more about his disenchantment with hypocrisy, commercialism and consumerism than dear old mom: “Advertising signs that con you into thinking you’re the one that can do what’s never been done.’’
