Famed musician, record producer and actress Queen Latifah was born Dana Elaine Owens on March 18, 1970, in Newark, N.J. She turns 49 today.

How did she become Queen?

Owens was given the nickname Latifah (Arabic for “delicate” or “sensitive”) as a child and later adopted the moniker Queen Latifah.

Success came quickly

In 1989, Latifah released her first album, “All Hail to the Queen,” which went on to sell more than 1 million copies.

Acting followed

In the 1990s, Latifah branched out into acting. She made her big screen debut in Spike Lee’s 1991 interracial romance drama “Jungle Fever.”

A CoverGirl spokesperson

Queen Latifah serves as a spokesperson for CoverGirl cosmetics. She even has her own line with the company: The Queen Collection.
