Owens was given the nickname Latifah (Arabic for “delicate” or “sensitive”) as a child and later adopted the moniker Queen Latifah.
Success came quickly
In 1989, Latifah released her first album, “All Hail to the Queen,” which went on to sell more than 1 million copies.
In the 1990s, Latifah branched out into acting. She made her big screen debut in Spike Lee’s 1991 interracial romance drama “Jungle Fever.”
