It’s World Ocean Day
Each June 8, or today on the 2019 calendar, marks World Ocean Day. On this day, we are reminded to work toward maintaining and improving the health of our vital oceans.
More sea than land worldwide
Oceans comprise about 71 percent of the surface of the Earth.
Can you name all 5?
The world’s five oceans are: The Arctic, Antarctic, Atlantic, Indian and Pacific. The Pacific is the largest, covering 30 percent of the Earth’s surface.
More known about the moon
More is known about the moon’s surface than the depths of the ocean. In fact, 12 people have stepped foot on the moon, but only three have been to the Mariana Trench — the deepest part of the ocean, at about 7 miles deep.
Longest mountain range underwater
The longest mountain range in the world is found underwater. Stretching more than 56,000 kilometers, the Mid-Oceanic Ridge is a mountain chain that runs along the center of the ocean basins.
