It’s his birthday
Rock star Alice Cooper turns 71 today. He was born Vincent Damon Furnier on Feb. 4, 1948, in Detroit.
A spiritual background
His father was a preacher in The Church of Jesus Christ, and Cooper was active in the church during his preteen years.
What’s in a name?
The legend is that the name “Alice Cooper” came from a session with a Ouija board, largely chosen because it sounded innocuous and wholesome and contrasted the “shock rock’’ image he and the band was developing.
Band became an individual
At first, the band he fronted was known as Alice Cooper, and it had vast success. By 1975, the band broke up and Cooper became a solo artist who legally changed his name to avoid legal disputes.
A well-rounded person
Away from music, Cooper is a film actor, a golfing celebrity, a restaurateur, and, since 2004, a popular radio DJ with his classic rock show “Nights with Alice Cooper.’’
