Everyone has heard the phrase "you are what you eat," but have you ever heard "you are what you drink at the bar"?
Well, that might not be entirely true. Sorry to all the cosmopolitan drinkers out there; just because you drink it, doesn't make you cosmopolitan.
However, a recent survey of 2,000 Americans — age 21 and older, of course — conducted by Budweiser links a person's libation of choice to their personality.
Participants in the survey were asked to match common drinks like beer, wine, Champagne, cosmopolitan, margarita and gin and tonic to perceived personality traits. These traits included agreeableness, conscientiousness, extraversion, neuroticism and openness to experience.
"I would say 60 percent of the time, a person's drink shows their lifestyle and choices," said Anne Roman, the general manager at Victory Lanes in Kankakee.
While Roman has not conducted a survey, she has been bartending off and on for 20 years and has noticed some trends in the bars.
"I believe a person's drink can give a reflection of their personality," Roman said.
"For example, a Bud versus a craft [beer] drinker. Most craft drinkers tend to be a little more defined in their ways and see value in upgrades. Where the domestic drinker can switch hit to any domestic and would buy whatever is cheapest," Roman added.
"So, the guy buying the $1.50 Busch Light is more likely to not be as loyal as that one guy who will jump hoops and spend heaps for his one previous flavor of craft," Roman explained.
Dr. Christopher Merchant, associate professor of psychology at Northeastern Illinois University, said an individual's preferences are closely related to their personality, but urged people to take the survey the same way any margarita lover would take their drink — with (a grain of) salt.
"One has to be careful when dissecting findings like this," Merchant said. "It is just as likely that beer has been marketed toward a particular personality type as it is that particular personality types prefer beer.
"While there is a possibility, and a reasonable one at that, that personality preferences affect choice of alcoholic beverage, the science would need to be fairly rigorous to separate out the effects of marketing from the effects of individual choice," he explained.
"This would certainly require a fairly sophisticated study in which we allowed individuals to make choices regarding beverages in the absence of having been marketed to," Merchant said. "However, in the current context of nearly ubiquitous advertisements, I don't know that this would be very feasible."
It looks like Dr. Merchant has busted the scientific of the survey, but there is no reason why the results can't be considered reasonable, let alone fun.
So, what kind of drink is your favorite? And what is your personality?
Here are what the 2,000 Americans thought of different alcohol drinkers:
Domestic Beer
People who drink domestic beers, and beers in general, are perceived as more genuine and approachable.
Wine
Whether its red, white, dry, sweet or anywhere in between — wine drinkers are said to be more reserved and a little on the serious side.
Cosmopolitan
Cosmopolitan drinkers are more flashy and fashion-minded, and always down for a good time.
Margaritas
If you love a margarita, chances are you love to party and have an energetic and outgoing personality.
Gin and tonic
Beware of the gin and tonic. Drinkers of this cocktail are said to be more analytical, calculating and cautious with their actions.
Champagne
Champagne drinkers are Champagne drinkers; need we say more? People who enjoy drinking some bubbly are said to perceive themselves as more sophisticated, and be perceived by others as more demanding.
