The Strawberry Jazz Festival, a popular celebration that kicks off community events in June in Kankakee County, is switching locations because of recent heavy rains.
Northfield Square mall in Bradley will host the 27th annual Strawberry Jazz Festival from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Typically held at Small Memorial Park, the location changed because of wet grounds at the park. Admission and parking are still free.
The festival is presented by the Community Arts Council of Kankakee County.
Event organizers Nancy DuTour and Dee Cook said there will be a full variety of craft items, art and an afternoon filled with entertainment.
The Strawberry Jazz Fest features more than 100 artists and crafters with handmade jewelry, paintings, crocheted items, photography, paper crafts, pottery, upcycled crafts, fiber art, stained glass, garden items, needlework, woodworking and specialty vendors with jams, jellies, farm-fresh produce, dips and mixes.
The Kankakee Kultivators will sell plants and provide information about gardening.
Local authors will discuss their writing experience and storylines.
The public is invited to view and bid on garden benches painted by artists from the Merchant Street Art Gallery of Artists with Autism. Winners will be announced at 3 p.m.
The fire safety house will be on-site from 1 to 4 p.m. The kid’s zone will feature crafts with Easterseals and Little Me Studio, plinko with Meijer, a dime toss and face-painting with Chris and Wild Style Design.
Scheduled entertainment includes jazz, instrumentalists, singers, dancers, a children’s choir and other choral groups performing gospel, folk and traditional music. Local theater groups will offer a sampling from coming productions.
And, of course, there will be plenty of strawberry pie, shortcake and ice cream, as well as pulled pork strawberry barbecue. Other food on-site will include burgers, hot dogs and brats, pulled chicken and pork, tacos, rib tips, cotton candy, kettle corn, funnel cakes, a variety of drinks and more.
The mission of the Community Arts Council is to serve as a central body to promote, develop, stimulate and encourage arts organizations, artists and arts participation in Kankakee County.
