In an ever-changing world, some long-standing traditions have been threatened.

One such tradition is the annual county fairs that are held throughout Illinois. Their future has been jeopardized by a number of factors, including a decline in rural population and a decline in state funding.

But a measure of hope arose recently when Gov. Bruce Rauner announced 92 county fairs statewide will receive $64,000 in grant money to help with the cost of the events.

While not a huge amount of money from an individual standpoint, it is enough to help bolster the purse strings. Something else that would help is increased attendance, and that’s where you come in.

Most of us have attended a county fair sometime during our lives, but a good many of us probably haven’t visited in years.

Think of the fun you once had eating cotton candy, riding the tilt-a-whirl and watching the rodeo. You might be older, but there’s no reason the same fun can’t be had again.

Visit a nearby county fair this year. The accompanying list gives you options.
