As construction winds down along Interstate 57 and Illinois Route 50 in Bradley, the state's transportation department on Thursday announced another multimillion dollar project — this time to replace the bridges crossing over the Kankakee River.

Set to begin in March and run through December 2015, replacement of the I-57 bridges a little more than one mile south of Court Street in Kankakee is estimated to cost $19.3 million. The governor's office said D Construction, Inc., in Coal City, submitted the lowest bid among seven companies.

Go under them on the river and you would definitely agree with the 50 rating. The steel is quite corroded.

This is the second phase of a decade of repair on I57 around K3. The other two exits are needing replacement too. The 308 exit is getting tore up pretty good due to the heavy truck traffic now.

Thank God for this project for many reasons.

Now is the time to really get "sprucing up" the city. When does this project begin/end?

Realize that this will send a good amount of traffic through Kankakee from Exit 312 to Exit 308 - and reverse . . . Court Street, Schuyler Avenue . . . might not be bad for local business either when you think about it.

Will the bridge construction prevent boat traffic from going under the bridge for two years?
