Donkey basketball

PETA recently honored Bremen principal Dave Kibelkis for stopping a donkey basketball fundraiser at his school. Read this for more details.

Kibelkis, a former coach at Peotone, cited safety concerns for the students and animals. Smart move!

Having been in a donkey basketball game, I understand the safety concern. (Here is my account).

I really didn’t consider the safety factor when the sports staff was invited to play at Donovan three years ago. But after playing, I am surprised to still be alive and in one piece. Other staff members also got a little roughed up as well.

The donkeys, on the other hand, were as safe as can be. The donkeys seemed to be healthy and well-kept so PETA may have over-reacted. There was nothing that showed that these animals were mistreated.

While it was quite a bit of fun, my donkey hoops days are long past.

Super Bowl plans

Super Bowl Sunday is now essentially a national holiday, making February the winner in which month has the most holidays (my birthday included!)

People who don’t even like football watch the Super Bowl. My wife watches the Super Bowl and she claims she is a football widow.

Last year, since the Bears were playing, I broke my tradition of going to the Soucies’ and went to my wife’s sister’s house instead. I figured there were more Bears fans there. Alas, when Rex Grossman started to turn the ball over, the Bears fans turned on him and I in my No. 8 jersey (my son picked it out for me for Christmas so I had to wear it) was left to the ridicule.

This year, the three kids and I will invade the Soucie home for a while, but we’ll probably wander home early because of the baby. My wife has to work, but with four or five women present, including Mrs. Soucie, I am sure I can find some help with Eleanor.

We used to play Trivial Pursuit until the others realized the futility of playing against me. Now we play poker, and I will finish one place out of the money. This, I assure you. Poker and a lack of patience don’t mix.

So what are your plans? If there are any non-football people out there, what do you on Super Bowl Sunday?

Theme songs

Monday night television is boring. Monday Night Football is gone and I will occasionally watch part of a college basketball game on ESPN, but for the most part, it’s just not very good.

I have been recording the Sarah Connor Chronicles on FOX and the first episode was outstanding, so maybe I will have a Monday show to watch.

Last night, my twins had gone to bed and I was rocking my baby while flipping channels, trying to find something quick and painless. I came across USA  and actually watched five minutes of Monday Night Raw, the WWE’s weekly broadcast.

I will admit to watching pro wrestling up until about 2002 when my wife and I adopted our twins. My wife said it was too violent and full of scantily clad women for my son to watch. Those were the exact same reasons I was watching it.

Since then, I watched off and on, but with no regularity. Last night, I realized there was one cool aspect — everyone has theme music.

When a wrestler enters the ring, his or her music plays. What a cool thing. I am going to rig up a sound system at work so when I walk into the news room, this plays.

So what is your theme song. If you can, provide a link. And no one can claim Beck’s Loser. We all know who that is earmarked for.

Easter candy

With Easter on March 23 this year,  I have seen a few stores positioning the Easter candy with the Valentine’s Day assortment.

This, of course, is great news. In the candy world, Easter almost works its way up to Christmas, for two reasons — Cadbury eggs and Reese’s Peanut Butter eggs.

Cadbury eggs are just fantastic, in any concoction they care to make them in. (Just keep coconut out of them; that’s my kryptonite.)  The originals are the best, but the caramel ones are also high quality.

Reese’s eggs are an enigma to me. I like Reese’s Peanut Butter cups, but if I never have one again, I’d be OK. The eggs, on the other hand, are confectionary death to this diabetic, but what a way to go!

I don’t have a reason. A friend once hypothesized that there is more peanut butter in the eggs and that’s why they are better. I don’t know, but I could eat them for breakfast, lunch and dinner, 365 days a year, especially with a tall glass of milk.

Just as a side note - Reese’s has white chocolate Christmas trees that were outstanding. I think the same applies to the eggs. I hope so.

I can take or leave another Easter staple, Peeps. They’re OK. I always feel bad eating candy in the shape of a cute animal.

What do you guys favor?

American Idol opener

These first American Idol shows are good timekillers and Tuesday’s season premiere didn’t disappoint in that regard.

There were some good singers and good stories (the woman with the sick little girl, for example), but these shows just don’t do it for me.

I just want to shale the malcontents (vet student and Star Wars nut, in particular) while I just want to ask the obviously awful one simple question - WHY?

Regardless, here I am blogging about it. Let’s throw it out to you - do you watch AI? Who did you like? Who did you dislike? Do you like these early season shows?

One week to Cloverfield

Anyone who saw Transformers last summer saw the trailer for an unnamed movie about a monster that attacks New York. That movie is Cloverfield and it is released next Friday (Jan. 18).

Here is a clip.

I am psyched to see this. I love disaster flicks and this one has been set up expertly.

Yes, I do own it in the box office fantasy game that friends and I play so I hope it does well raking in the dough.

My greatest fear is that the hand-held camera effect will turn people off or that the monster will turn out to be something stupid like a societal vice-created creature. I also hope if the people are able to kill it, it’s with weapons rather than a virus or love or anything.

Are you guys planning on seeing it? What are your thoughts on the monster? Godzilla-like? Big, giant troll?

Best part of kindergarten

I don’t know why this topic came up, but a colleague and I were recently discussing the best part of kindergarten. He said it was the half-day feature, which, of course, is a strong possibility. I went with the nap time, though.

Was there anything better than unrolling that plastic mat and planting yourself down for a  snooze, even if it was for 15 minutes?

My teacher would read to us sometimes, and sometimes she would just let us sleep. On hot days after recess, we almost always used the time as a cooling off period. What a great aroma that was, the smell of sweaty kids on plastic mats.

Baby shots

By the title of this entry, you may get the wrong idea. I am not writing about drinking booze out of small shot glasses, although that sounds like a great idea after the past few nights.

Eleanor, who turned four months today, has recently declined the option of sleep, at least, at a decent hour. She used to fall asleep around 8:3o p.m. I then took her upstairs and that left me an hour to clean up around the house and do dishes, etc. I used to go to bed around 10, get seven broken hours of sleep and get up at 5 a.m.

Now, the little booger has refused to fall asleep until at least 11, which means, of course, I have to attempt to put her to sleep from 9 on. Basically, I get nothing done.
