Where was the sport of competitive eating 30 years ago?

Sure, there were pie-eating contests and hot dog eating contests. Now, there is sushi, tacos and meatballs.

The first-ever meatball eating contest was held Sunday in Las Vegas. What would the odds be to stage such a contest in that city?

Former hot dog eating champion Joey Chestnut was crowned the winner.

He woofed down 50 (2 ounce) meatballs in 10 minutes.  Chestnut, who also eats pizza and chicken wings competitively, also earned $1,500 for the victory. Pat “Deep Dish” Bertoletti finished second eating 49 meatballs.

This Saturday get ready for another big contest. The Roy Rogers Roast Beef Slider Eating Championship will be held in Frederick, Md.

Before you think I am really into this stuff, I learned about this from a story posted by The Associated Press. I researched on Google and was directed to the International Federation of Competitive Eating Web site.

However, I would love to see a leftovers eating competition. That is the true test of champion eaters.
